Valentine's Day was named after Saint Valentinus from Rome, the patron saint of lovers. He lived in the 3rd century and married couples according to the Christian ritual, although the emperor had forbidden this act. According to tradition, the marriages of these couples seemed to have been contracted on favorable terms. Valentinus is said to have given the couple flowers from his garden.
